JOB POSITION #169: POLICE RECORDS TECHNICIAN

NUMBER OF VACANCIES:  1

DEPARTMENT:  Police Department, Records Division

PAY GRADE:  F Non-Exempt

HIRING RANGE:  $14.7231/Hour

DAYS WORKED:  Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday

HOURS WORKED:  7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

TYPE OF POSITION:  Regular, Full-Time

JOB DUTIES

SELECTION & SCREENING TOOLS:  Clerical Testing and In-Person Interview.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Performs a variety of routine clerical, secretarial, and administrative work in support of law enforcement activities.

Works under the close supervision of the Civilian Operations Supervisor.

Assists in the preparation of a variety of reports and records including accident reports, tow-in reports, citation reports, offense reports, arrest/booking reports, reports of investigation, field interrogation reports, warrant entry & maintenance, NCIC entries and clears, evidence inventory reports, and other reports of a similar nature.   Researches, reviews, and restores in-car camera and lapel camera video footage.

Merges police reports into the Law Enforcement Records Management System (LERMS).

Maintains the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) and or National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS).

Is required to maintain the LERMS system, enters data into the computer, and generates a variety of law enforcement management system reports.  May be required to become certified and operate National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) criminal data information systems.  Query and monitor the Tracs system for paperless tickets and crash reports.

May be required to dispatch information to officers in the field, as needed, or communicate effectively with the Dispatch Center.

Provides a variety of police related information to the public and governmental agencies.  Facilitates the Inspections of Public Records, in accordance with state guidelines and agency directives.

Receives incoming calls, determines nature and urgency of calls, and coordinates appropriate response.  Handles lobby traffic inquiries by determining appropriate action; must possess excellent customer service skills.

Receives requests from officers on call for special or specific information; follows up with appropriate information and relays the same back to the officer.

Serves as a personal assistant to command staff and provides a variety of administrative assistance as needed.

Composes a variety of correspondence, reports and other materials requiring independent judgment as to content, accuracy and completeness.

Establishes and maintains records systems using moderately independent judgment, with an emphasis on self-motivation and initiative in a fast-paced environment.

May be required to handle evidence and property, chain of custody reports, and be able to lift items up to 25 pounds, assist in the destruction of narcotics and firearms.  May be required to become certified in the management of property and evidence by the International Association of Property and Evidence.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Maintains inventories and orders departmental supplies and materials.

Maintains departmental electronic records and files.

May be required to travel for certification trainings and conferences.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

May serve as a member of various employee committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy which includes:  pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

High school diploma or GED equivalent; college degree preferred, and two years of general office, communications, or records management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record for past three years.

Ability to type 40 wpm or at a rate sufficient to perform duties of the job.

Must be able to read and write the English language.

Some knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment required.

Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Ability to learn the City's geography.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

Advanced knowledge of software applications such as word, excel, etc.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Personal computer, including word processing and excel, specialized software, and multi-line phones, calculator, fax machine, copy machine, bar code reader, bar code printers, DVD robotic server, surveillance cameras, laser and inkjet printers.
