JOB POSITION #154: HAZ-MAT TECHNICIAN

HIRING RANGE:  Additional $.25 an hour

JOB DUTIES

The Duties outlined below are in addition to duties performed in the currently held position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Works as a member of the Hazardous Materials Response Team under the direction of a team leader or Incident Commander.

Must be able to perform hard labor in a hot environment while wearing a haz-mat suit.

Uses highly technical and specialized equipment for the containment, stabilization and mitigation of emergencies involving hazardous and toxic substances.

Operates specialized computers, instruments and communication equipment.

Participates in and attends special training to maintain skill and knowledge.

Responds to emergencies when recalled for duty.

Assists in the training of Farmington Fire Department personnel.

Assists in the training of local industry and San Juan County Emergency personnel.

Inspects, maintains and repairs special Hazardous Material equipment.

Maintains a variety of records and data regarding Hazardous Material equipment and training.

Must successfully pass an annual OSHA (Occupation Safety and Health Administration) medical examination.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

On occasion serves on various committees.

Obtain the ability to operate large motorized fire apparatus.

May be assigned to, or assist with special projects as directed.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have completed at least one (1) year as a firefighter in good standing with the Farmington Fire Department at the time of selection.

Must have passed the most recent department physical fitness test.

Must be State Certified EMT-B (Emergency Medical Training - Basic).

Must have a valid driver's license applicable to fire apparatus.

Must have completed a NFPA 472 certified Chemistry of Hazardous Materials and Haz-Mat Technician course or be able to complete this training as soon as available and prior to receiving technical pay.
