JOB POSITION #198:  RECREATION LEADER FITNESS CENTER

NUMBER OF VACANCIES:   1

DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs

WORK LOCATION:  Bonnie Dallas Senior Center

HIRING RANGE: $9.25/Hour

PAY CLASS:   Temporary

TYPE OF POSITION:  Temporary, Part-Time

DAYS WORKED:   3 to 5, Days Varied

HOURS WORKED: 30 Hours/Week

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Works under the general supervision of the Assistant Adult Programs Manager.

Use excellent customer service skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Provides leadership and encourages participation in Activity Center programs.

Must be able to take charge and direct older adults in case of an emergency.

Assists in facilitating a variety of community recreation programs for older adults including physical activities, and special interest classes.

Performs a variety of receptionist and customer service duties for BDSC Activity Center.

Greets visitors to the BDSC, Activity Center and directs them to the appropriate area.

Answers and screens incoming calls and takes messages for the BDSC, Activity Center.

Assists patrons with membership enrollment and receives fees for various recreational activities.

Gives information to the public regarding all BDSC, Activity Center programs throughout the year.

Collects sign-in sheets, enters data into Recreation database and runs weekly reports.

Maintains cleanliness of the Activity Center and oversees the safety of the participants using the facility during operating hours.

Responsible for opening, closing and securing the Fitness Center. 

Must obtain a valid New Mexico Food Handler's Card within 90 days of hire.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program. This includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Extensive background checks required.

Background in recreation, physical fitness and/or senior programs is desired.

Ability to assist in coordinating and directing varied activities involved in a physical fitness program. 

Desire to work with older adults.

Knowledge of the physical changes associated with aging is preferred.

Friendly disposition and caring attitude. 

Advanced public relations skills necessary.

Advanced telephone skills necessary. 

Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel software.

Ability to count change and use a cash register.

Skills in First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens and CPR or willingness and ability to obtain within the first year of employment.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City Personnel, and the public.

Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions and meet deadlines. 

Ability to work varied hours, including Saturdays and evenings. 

Ability to work independently.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Computer, including Microsoft software; cash register; calculator; copy and fax machines; phone; mobile or portable radio; janitorial equipment; various sports equipment used in recreation programs.
