Performs a variety of administrative, skilled and complex technical work in the procurement, installation, maintenance, training on client devices, and communications within the City of Farmington. The incumbent's priority will be supporting the technology needs of the Farmington Fire Department, but will also be expected to perform job duties associated with being a member of the team supporting all City Department's technology needs and requirements.

Using excellent customer service skills, the incumbent establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the City and works under the general supervision of the Technical Services Supervisor.

In addition to performing duties associated with the daily operations of the City's IT Department on an as needed, as available basis, the priority job duties of this position will include;

Responsible for coordinating with city IT staff on the needs of the Fire Department's LAN/WAN system, and assisting with the City's LAN/WAN as needed.

Responsible for specification writing for purchases of client side hardware and software.

Responsible for maintaining Fire Department Fire/EMS records system.

Responsible for installation and maintenance of the Fire Department's Mobile Data Computer system.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server (2003-2008), and Windows 8/7/XP. 

Working knowledge of IP Addressing, TCP/IP, Ethernet backbone wiring and CDPD. 

Plans, recommends and oversees the appropriate security measures for these systems.

Interacts extensively with hardware/software vendors and the City of Farmington I.S/P.C. Services on technical matters.

Responsible for the day to day operation of the Fire Departments server software, and usage statistics to adjust configuration settings as needed.

Provides support for all Fire Department personal computers.  This includes hardware, peripherals, software installation, and troubleshooting of client devices.

Maintains inventory and records of configurations for all hardware and software, licensing and networking agreements.

Must be able to prepare lesson plans and conduct training in the use of hardware and such software applications as Microsoft Windows XP/7/8, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Explorer, the Fire Department Fire/EMS records software and general personal computer and laptop use.

Assists Fire Department administration in the preparation and implementation of annual technology budget.

Utilizes Dell Kbox Helpdesk system to track and document technical issues

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position


Assists in other department administrative activities as assigned.

Keeps abreast of current developments and new professional techniques in the field through attendance of meetings, conferences, training seminars and through regular reading of professional literature.

Occasional travel out of town is necessary.

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes, pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.

Extensive background checks required.

High school diploma or equivalent required combined with three (3) years experience and an associates degree in information technology or similarly related field or any satisfactory combination of experience and training that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge and skills.  CompTIA A+ and Network + andor similar certifications are strongly preferred.

Working knowledge of Fire Department Zetron alerting system.

Working knowledge of Fire Department mobile radios, hand held radios, pagers and cell phones.

Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.

Ability to install and operate a variety of software programs; ability to maintain existing software programs and computer systems; ability to troubleshoot common hardware and software problems; thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Microsoft 2003/2008 Server, Windows XP, 7/8, and Apple iPad products.

A good working knowledge of the principles and techniques of Fire Department administration, data processing applications, issues, trends and functions related to fire services practices is a plus.

Must be thoroughly versed in installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of Microsoft Windows compatible computers.  Working knowledge of networking, device sharing, and emulation procedures and functions.

Ability to follow verbal and or written instructions.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and local government officials.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.


Vehicle, radio, pager, calculator, phone, copy machine, fax machine, personal computer (desktop and laptop), electrical testing equipment, meter testing equipment and various hand tools.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; walk; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds (with assistance).  Specific vision and abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
