JOB POSITION #182:  INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM TECHNICIAN I

HIRING RANGE: $17.2716 - $21.2217/hourly                                                       

DAYS WORKED: Monday Friday                       

HOURS WORKED: 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Performs a variety of duties in maintaining traffic signals, microwave system, radios, emergency vehicle preemption systems, and subsystems.

Works under the supervision of the Intelligent Traffic Engineering Administrator.

Using excellent customer services skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Maintains and repairs traffic signals including troubleshooting and repairing malfunctioning parts or systems, testing new and repaired electronic traffic signals, performing basic wiring jobs, and installing new equipment as necessary.

Modifies or constructs new traffic signal equipment as required to include underground, above ground, and aerial work.

Routinely maintains traffic signals and display equipment in the field, including preventative maintenance, cleaning, upgrading equipment, replacing bulbs, and documentation of work.

Responds to emergency traffic signal problems in the field by troubleshooting traffic controller system malfunctions, replacing faulty parts and reconstructing damaged equipment.  This requires rotating on-call signal stand-by duty.

Documents all work performed, including listing cause of problem, corrective measures taken, replacement parts used, etc., both in writing and using the computerized traffic control inventory (VIMMS) system.

Monitors and inspects contracted traffic signal construction and maintenance work to ensure compliance with city standards.

Is generally alert to conditions and events occurring on city streets and rights-of-way and can respond accordingly.

While performing job duties, takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.

Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.

Attendance at work and ability to meet "on-call" requirements are essential function of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and alcohol Testing Policy which includes, pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing. This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.

Extensive background checks required. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent supplemented by one year of related technical or college training in electronics, electronic maintenance/troubleshooting procedures or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid State driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.

Must have a telephone at residence and be on 24-hour call; must be able to be at the Municipal Operations Center within thirty minutes after receiving a call. Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the public. Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Miscellaneous hand and power tools, aerial boom truck, platform lift truck, utility locator, forklift, crane track, traffic control computer and related systems, specialty radio and electronic testing equipment, telephone, mobile radio, fax machine, personal computer, and calculator.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds with assistance.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally walks in outside weather conditions and in the dark.  The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places, in hazardous traffic conditions on busy streets and in moving traffic; and may be exposed to slippery, wet, and ice cold conditions. The employee frequently works out of doors in inclement weather.  Operates city vehicle in all types of weather conditions.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
