JOB POSITION #55: Fire Code Inspector

NUMBER OF VACANCIES:   1

DEPARTMENT:   Fire

WORK LOCATION:  Fire Department Administration

PAY CLASS:  Temporary

HIRING RANGE:  $16.00 to $18.00 hourly

DAYS WORKED:  Monday Friday 

HOURS WORKED: Varies, Part-time

TYPE OF POSITION: Temporary, Part-Time

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the Department and the City.

Works under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal.

May provide public education in fire prevention, including giving talks, demonstrations, and presentations before community groups, schools, and other organizations or institutions.

Inspects existing commercial structures, construction and remodel sites for compliance with fire codes.  Resolves compliance problems with owners within scope of knowledge and authority.

Assists with acceptance testing for systems such as automatic fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, fire alarms, and fixed fire-extinguishing systems.

Issues warnings and citations for fire code violations.

Maintains a variety of data and records regarding fire inspection or prevention activities; prepares reports regarding fire inspection or prevention as required.

May assist in the investigation of fire incidents.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Assists in other department administrative activities as assigned.

Instructs classes in assigned subject areas.

Issues burn permits.

Conducts voluntary home inspections.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes, pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Preference points will be awarded to candidates based on formal education, based on a 100-point grading scale (Fire inspector I and II, New Mexico registered EMT, 0.5 points = Associate's degree, 1 point = Bachelor's degree, 1.5 points = Master's degree or higher) 

Working knowledge of first aid.

Skill in the operation of the tools and equipment listed below.

Ability to effectively apply standard fire prevention techniques.

Ability to act effectively in potentially stressful situations.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.

Ability to meet special requirements.

Must be 21 years or older.

Preference points given for ICC Fire Inspector I and II, or equivalent.

Must possess or be capable of obtaining Fire Inspector certification within six months of employment.

Must possess a valid New Mexico driver's license or state of current residency without record of suspension or revocation in any state, and have acceptable driving record.

Must be able to read and write the English language.

Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Vehicle, radio, pager, personal computer, calculator, phone, first aid equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; walk; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
