JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Ability to work weekends, holidays, and various work hours.

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of buildings, grounds and parks.

Preforms all duties of a Maintenance Worker I and Seasonal positions.

Works under the supervision of the Parks Foreman. May supervise Parks Maintenance Worker I positions, community service workers or seasonal employees as required and assigned.

Assists in the training and/or supervision of lower level employees or community service workers.

Monitors and evaluates performance by assigned seasonal and temporary workers.

Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites work flow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.

Maintains harmony among workers and may deal with grievances.

Performs or assists subordinates in performing duties; addresses errors and complaints.

Lays out daily work schedules and assigns tasks to appropriate individuals and coordinates the completion of the same.

Provides necessary supervision, direction, and assistance to crews at work sites. Enforces policies, regulations, and safety and health standards.

Determines, calculates and secures the appropriate materials and supplies for a specific project.

Studies, interprets and applies blueprints to projects. Assures all blue-stake materials are available.

Improves work methods to accomplish assigned work.

Projects needs for equipment, materials and supplies for assigned projects.

Assures that tools and equipment are properly maintained and kept in proper working condition.

Prepares and maintains daily, monthly, and annual reports and records, as assigned.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces park tables and slabs.

Performs minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi‑skilled trades work.

Performs routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment.

Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Operates backhoe, tractors, mowing equipment, hand mowers, jack hammers, welders, dump trucks, trucks, steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other listed equipment as needed.

Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions.

Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.

Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.

Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs, prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.

Assists in the construction of new parks facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, irrigation, and foundation work.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

May assign work assignments, scheduling and delegating work.

Mows and maintains park and open space areas such as baseball and soccer fields; mows weeds; cleans and maintains tennis courts and nets; maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair, trouble shooting, and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.

Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of parks and open spaces.

Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.

Performs custodial work such as required and assigned, including: sweep floors; vacuum carpets; mop; shampoo and steam clean carpets; buff non-carpeted areas; dump garbage and reline cans with liners; clean and sanitize rest rooms and replenish supplies; sweep; empty ash cans; clean spills; clean drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, dust furniture; wash windows, walls, metal and woodwork; clean rain gutters; sweep roofs.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

This position requires a baseline audiometric examination.

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and two years experience in repair and maintenance work, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

New Mexico herbicide applicator's license preferred, but not required.

Valid driver's license with CDL endorsement, with acceptable driving record for past three years, or ability to obtain CDL within 1 year of entry into position.

Working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds construction and maintenance.

Segmental Retaining Wall (SRW) Certification or ability to obtain such within 5 years of entry into position.

Concrete Paver Installer (CPI) Certification, by Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, or ability to obtain such within 5 years of entry into position.

Must be trained on Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), or ability to obtain such within 5 years of entry into position.

Must complete necessary Continuing Education Units (CEU's) to maintain certifications after acquired.

Ability to design, install, troubleshoot and repair irrigation/sprinkler systems.

Knowledge of codes and regulations pertaining to construction.

Excellent skills in mathematics required.

Ability to calculate and set grades.

Knowledge of erosion control methods, retaining walls, etc.

Knowledge of concrete finishing, framing and reinforcement.

Cultural skills as related to turf, trees, flowers and shrubs.

Extensive knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds construction and maintenance. Considerable knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.

Ability to read blueprints and follow detailed instructions.

Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

Working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs; working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.

Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.

Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Ability to use equipment and tools listed properly and safely.

Front-end loader/tractor, backhoe, dump truck, skid loader, Sand Pro, Truckster, John Deere ATV, Top dressers, Sprayers, fertilizer hopper, soil sifter, seeder, sod cutter, string, trimmers, edgers, electric motors, pumps, aerifier, mowers, fork lift, chain saw, weed trimmers, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work; janitorial equipment including floor buffers, steam cleaner, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuums, mops, brooms, and dusting equipment, motor vehicle, telephone, mobile radio and calculator.

Basic Computer skills.
