JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Directly manages and oversees the Farmington Museum's collections.

Manages all aspects of collections care, following and implementing accepted professional museum standards and best practices. Directly manages the acquisition, cataloging and documentation, care, maintenance and handling, use and access, copyright, security, environmental monitoring of objects and facilities and object-based database development, paper files and archives.

Works under the direction of the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions.

Collaborates on exhibition planning, including preparing budgets for related costs, preparing checklists and images of objects for exhibition, publications, and research. Compiles historical information on collection objects or photographs for labels or brochures.

Identifying and contacting potential donors, conferring with curator on donors.

Is responsible for loans and traveling exhibition organization, documentation and logistics, shipping, receiving, packing and condition reports and object security for collections exhibitions and for incoming and outgoing loans and travelling exhibitions.

Serves on collections related committees, assists with identification of potential donors and collections, assists with the drafting and implementation of collections related policies and procedures.

Works closely with the public in regard to requests for information. These requests may include research of local historical collection from newspapers, photographs, maps, etc. Process duplication requests from photo collection when required. Makes arrangements for reprints and enlargements or digital image files and processes necessary paperwork for requests.

Manages collections database for a complete inventory of all collections materials. Maintains computer history of collection including check out dates and by whom, return dates, condition of object, etc.

Is responsible for system security, digitization of images, periodic software upgrades and database system migration. Works with City of Farmington Information Technology Department to meet all City of Farmington security and backup requirements to insure the integrity of the database.

Performs archival research on collection materials and/or artifacts for inclusion in records and databases including provenance research in coordination with curator and director.

Responsible for implementing and maintaining an Integrated Pest Management program to monitor, identify, and treat any insect or rodent activity for the safety of the collections.

In collaboration with other museum staff, establishes object conservation priorities and plans/implements the safe storage of all works in the collection.

Responsible for the security of artifacts in museum collection and exhibit areas. Performs daily walk through of exhibit and storage areas to check for security issues including insect/pest presence, environmental concerns such as water leaks, and Administrative maintenance of areas.

Trains and schedules volunteers to assist with appropriate collections activities including research, object handling, cleaning and set up of exhibitions.

May participate in the recruitment of volunteers as appropriate.

Prepares for special events such as exhibit openings, programs, etc.

May assist in training volunteers for the museum store, museum tours/programs.

Performs various museum clerical duties including typing, computer data entry, answering telephone calls, scheduling museum programs, etc.

Required to perform shift work in a rotation of days, evenings, and nights including weekends and holidays.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Helps greet visitors to the museum and directs inquires to the appropriate area.

May serve on various community or employee committees as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program. This includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Bachelor's degree in history, museum science or related field and two (2) years experience in a museum setting, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of and experience implementing accepted professional museum standards and best practices in collections management

Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.

Extensive background checks required.

Must be available to work a varied work week to include weekends, evenings and holidays as required.

Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Must possess excellent grammar and composition capabilities.

Must possess a high degree of proficiency in public relations skills.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Ability to follow verbal and or written instructions.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Personal computer and applicable software packages such as Microsoft word, Excel, collections database, calculator, copy and fax machine, phone, motor vehicle, and various tools and hardware necessary for museum installation (including painting, hammering, drilling, etc.). Conservation equipment such as digital data loggers, hygro-thermograph and sling psychrometer.
