Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the City of Farmington Fire Department.

Works under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal.

May provide public education in fire prevention, including giving talks, demonstrations, and presentations before community groups, schools, and other organizations or institutions.

Inspects existing commercial structures, construction and remodel sites for compliance with fire codes. Resolves compliance problems with owners within scope of knowledge and authority.

Assists with acceptance testing for systems such as automatic fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, fire alarms, and fixed fire-extinguishing systems.

Conduct code compliance research for inspection and fire investigation.

Issues warnings and citations for fire code violations.

Maintains a variety of data and records regarding fire inspection or prevention activities; prepares reports regarding fire inspection or prevention as required.

Conduct fire investigations or assist in the investigation of fire incidents.

Develop fire investigation reports and conduct related research.

Conduct analysis of statements, burn patterns, fire debris, and evidence to determine origin and cause of fire incidents.

Upon certification of IAAI- FIT or higher, or NAFI-CFEI, be available to serve as on-call fire investigator a minimum of 4 shifts per month.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.


Assists in other department administrative activities as assigned.

Instructs classes in assigned subject areas.

Issues burn permits.

Conducts voluntary home inspections.

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes, pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Pass a pre-employment physical and psychological examination.

Must be 21 years or older.

Have a valid High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Must possess, or be able to obtain, a First Responder certification within twelve months.

Skill in the operation of the tools and equipment listed below.

Ability to effectively apply standard fire prevention techniques.

Ability to act effectively in potentially stressful situations.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.

Ability to meet special requirements.

Must possess or be capable of obtaining Fire Inspector certification within six months of employment.

Must possess IAAI-FIT, or equivalent, or be capable of obtaining IAAI-FIT within eighteen months of employment.

Must possess a valid New Mexico driver's license or state of current residency without record of suspension or revocation in any state, and have acceptable driving record.

Must reside within 25 miles of Farmington City Limits and be able to respond after hours (on-call) within 12 months of hire.

Must be able to read and write the English language.


Vehicle, radio, pager, personal computer, calculator, phone, first aid equipment, camera equipment, measurement equipment, monitoring tools, and evidence collection equipment and supplies.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; walk; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Preference Points:

Preference points will be awarded to candidates based on the highest level of formal education completed (0.5 point for an Associate's Degree, 1 point for a Bachelor's Degree, and 1.5 points for a Master's Degree or higher; based on a 100 point grading scale).

0.5 points = New Mexico registered EMT, 0.5 point = IFSAC Fire Inspector, 1 point= ICC Fire Inspector, 1.5 points= ICC Fire Inspector II, .5 point = IAAI-ECT or NAFI-CVFI, 1 point =IAAI-FIT or NAFI-CFEI, 2 points = IAAI-CFI.
