JOB DUTIES

SUMMARY BACKGROUND:

Are you a team focused, enthusiastic individual with a passion for animal care and behavior? We are seeking a person to assist in managing our animal care team while helping the shelter take its next steps into becoming an animal welfare driven shelter. This position will help supervise the animal care team as well as assist in developing a behavioral and enrichment program for the shelter animals. The Farmington Regional Animal Shelter is dedicated to increasing its live release rate and changing the culture of the region to one of animal welfare.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Animal Welfare and Wellness

Assisting in caring for and ensuring the humane treatment of animals housed at the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter.

Under the direction of the Animal Services Manager, ensure team cares for the well-being and safety of animals, including the providing routine wellness care, feeding, water, and providing clean and healthy living conditions and stimulating environments.

Assist in training, coaching, supervising, and directing the kennel technician team under the direction of the Animal Services manager, Animal Welfare Director and Veterinarian.

Leads Animal Care Technicians in cleaning and sanitizing of kennels.

Work cooperatively with all volunteers, recognizing the talent and commitment they bring to the organization.

Using humane and accepted practices to assist and perform euthanasia of animals by injection.

Communicate clearly, concisely and accurately in order to ensure effective kennel operations, assist with upkeep of SOP manuals and staff training.

Behavior and Enrichment

The Animal care and enrichment coordinator will oversee the mental health and stimulation of pets at the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter. This person will work closely with the Community Programs Manager and report to the Animal Services manager in this area. Duties will include but are not limited to:

Assist in behavioral assessments of animals for adoption and transport when needed.

Creation of enrichment calendars for dogs and cats and implementation through kennel technicians and volunteers.

Establish playgroups and activities for shelter dogs and cats.

Assist in education and training of all shelter staff and volunteers in safe handling techniques and reading animal body language.

Create individual enrichment plans for animals with specific needs and/or longer stays in the shelter.

Keep up to date on enrichment ideas and introduce new concepts as appropriate.

Customer Service

Cultivate positive customer relations through professional, courteous, and educational interactions while actively promoting our mission, services, programs and events.

Provide prompt, courteous and excellent service to all internal and external customers at all times, including but not limited to adopters, staff, volunteers, board members, city and county officials and animal control officers, veterinarians, representatives of other rescue organizations, people looking for lost pets or relinquishing owned pets, and the general public.

Assist customers with the pet adoption process by facilitating customer/animal interactions to ensure a safe and pleasant experience, accurately answering questions, and providing guidance.

Demonstrate a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to FRAS policies and procedures.

Ensure a safe work environment, follow all safety guidelines, and model safe work practices.

Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal or the organization at risk.

Follow direction of the Animal Welfare Director and Animal Services Manager as well as the Veterinarian.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Extensive background checks required.

Associates degree or equivalent.

Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.

Two (2) years of experience with animal welfare, animal behavior/training or veterinary services.

One (1) year supervisory experience.

Animal care and customer service experience required.

Knowledge Skills Abilities should demonstrate practiced animal care.

Must be able to safely handle animals with an unknown temperament.

Modern office practices, methods and computer equipment; principles and procedures or record keeping.

Must be able to obtain Euthanasia Certification within one year of date of hire.

Strong communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with public and staff; principals and supervision and teambuilding.

Ability to receive money and make proper change.

Ability to cope emotionally with the euthanasia.

Ability to manage multiple situations simultaneously.

Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Commitment to mission, values, goals and success of the FRAS with compassion and genuine affection for animals.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and the public.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Must be able to work around animals without an allergic reaction.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Animal capture equipment, first aid equipment, catch poles, leashes, gloves and ropes to handle animals, chemical cleaning materials in shelter maintenance, including chlorine.
