TYPE OF POSITION: Regular, Full-Time






This is a supervisory position working with the nationally accredited Farmington Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department (PRCA). The Department has eleven (11) diverse divisions that are committed to building gateways that enrich our community through exceptional customer focus.

This position will provide superior sports programming for the department focusing on the scheduling and supervising of City sports fields and facilities, developing and implementing special events such as mountain bike races and 10K/5K races, and organizing sports leagues and tournaments that may include softball, kickball, sports camps, tennis, sand volleyball, and volleyball,

Under the general direction of the Recreation Manager, this position oversees the management, implementation, and continuous improvement of the programming for recreational sports, tournaments, and special events for the City of Farmington.


Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager.

Evaluates, develops and implements recreation activities, programs, services, and special events (with a focus on sports), that fulfills the department master plan and vision for the community.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other department employees, other City personnel, officials, and all members of the general public.

Establishes, fosters, and maintains working relationships with various user groups of City fields and facilities; assists in establishing and maintaining MOUs

Oversees the coordinating and permitting of Applications for Facility Usage submitted by the local high school athletics, local youth and adult sports organizations, and outside sports groups wishing to reserve City fields for games, leagues, and tournaments.

Assists in supervising the proper usage of City athletic fields and facilities by outside groups and the public.

Works developing and facilitating various special events, including the currently established Riverfest 10K & 5K, the Connie Mack World Series, Road Apple Rally Mountain Bike Race, Turkey Trot 5K, Reindeer Romp 5K, Kids' Fishing Derby, etc.

Plans, organizes, schedules, and directs all games, facilities, officials, and scorekeepers for city league sports including basketball, volleyball, softball, , and other trending sports and activities. Plans and produces awards for annual tournaments and leagues.

Utilizes department owned software to register, schedule, and maintain league and tournament stats.

Maintains related records and statistics for programs, personnel, and participants involved in sponsored activities.

Works closely with the PRCA Marketing Division to coordinate public awareness of programs and events.

Utilizes the Recreation Center's social media outlets including Facebook, Instagram, and website to market and communicate information regarding sports programs.

Promotes a safe and healthy environment for all Recreation Center programs and activities. Regularly assists with minor cleaning and disinfecting of equipment and building.

Serves as the City Representative for all sports associations as needed.

Recruits, trains, and supervises administrative staff, parttime recreation staff, special interest instructors, seasonal employees, sports officials, and volunteers.

Performs supervisory duties of the Recreation Center in the absence of the Recreation Manager.

Prepares disbursements for special event and league expenses.

Assists the Recreation Manager with budget planning and monitoring the budget throughout the year.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.


Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, assisting customers, scheduling facilities, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, helping set up tables and chairs for classes, etc.

Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program. This includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Graduation from a fouryear college or university with a degree in recreation or a closely related field and two years recreation experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation sports program.

Knowledge of sports programming including scheduling and rules in basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, racquetball, wallyball, kickball, and other sports that may be part of a municipal recreation program.

Valid New Mexico, or state of current residency, driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.

First Aid, AED, and CPR certification, or ability to obtain such within six (6) months of hiring.

ANSI certified Food Manager preferred, or must be obtained through City classes within six (6) months after entry into employment.

Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied and imaginative activities and events involved in a community recreation program.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of paid full-time, part-time andseasonal staff, and volunteers.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Ability to meet deadlines.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.


Personal computer, including Microsoft Word software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; mobile or portable radio; automobile; various sports equipment used in recreation programs.
