JOB POSITION #103:  Concrete Carpenter

NUMBER OF VACANCIES:   1                           

DEPARTMENT:  Public Works/Streets       

WORK LOCATION:  MOC                                   

HIRING RANGE: $15.53-$19.10/hourly      

DAYS WORKED: Monday Friday                      

HOURS WORKED: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.                  

TYPE OF POSITION:  Regular, Full-Time




Under the supervision of the Street Division Foreman, performs routine street maintenance and concrete carpentry duties.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Performs carpentry duties.

Determines the appropriate elevation, grades and radii for form placement.

Performs concrete finishing duties.

Operates a wide variety of semi-skilled street construction equipment.

Operates snow removal equipment.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.


Under the supervision of Street Division Foreman, performs routine street maintenance construction tasks, including a wide variety of semi-skilled manual tasks and extends to the operation of light to medium sized automotive equipment.

Operates dump trucks in a wide variety of Public Works' maintenance and construction tasks.

Assists in setting up and cleaning of job sites including traffic control devices.

Cleans weeds, trash, and other debris from work site.

Performs custodial tasks.

May serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned.

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy which includes:  pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Extensive background checks required.

This position requires a baseline audiometric examination.

High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent work experience in a closely related construction field.

Must have completed six (6) months as a Concrete Carpenter Trainee.

Valid New Mexico Commercial Drivers License with tanker endorsement required with acceptable driving record for the past three years, or ability to obtain within 90 days after employment begins.

Comprehensive knowledge of concrete finishing. 

Experience in the field of carpentry.

Ability to perform math calculations.

Experience operating jack-hammers, power saws, drills, salt and sand spreader, and other related equipment.

One year of work experience in a construction related field involving the operation of trucks or other related light automotive equipment, or equivalent vocational training courses.

Must have a telephone at residence.

Must be willing and able to be on 24 hour call.

Must be able to be at the Municipal Operations Center within 30 minutes after receiving call.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.


Operates jack-hammers, vibrating skid plate tampers, chain saws, weed eaters, hand picks, shovels, brooms, rakes, pitch forks, pruners, power saws, drills, salt and sand spreader, and other miscellaneous hand tools, and a wide variety of semi-skilled street construction equipment.  Operates snow control equipment and dump trucks.  Operates steel wheel rollers, rubber tire rollers, crack sealing machine, loaders, water trucks and similar equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

Works with asphalt, crack sealing material, concrete, salt, liquid calcium chloride, liquid magnesium chloride, oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, herbicides, paint, traffic control signs, trash, weeds, tree limbs, dirt rock, sand and gravel.

Frequent exposure to gasoline, diesel, paint and asphalt fumes.

Operates and works around noisy equipment, vibrating equipment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
