Oversees the Library Volunteer program, a division of the City of Farmington Mayor's Volunteer Partners. This includes ensuring a viable program is maintained through ongoing recruitment and retention, while assuring volunteer satisfaction through recognition efforts. 

Works under the supervision of the Library Program Coordinator.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities over Library staff, but may supervise volunteers for the library.

Serves as principal liaison between volunteers, Library staff, other City departments, and the community. Also serves as liaison to advisory committees, task forces, and community meetings in order to develop relationships that will facilitate volunteer recruitment and retention efforts.

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

Recruits, trains, and coordinates with volunteers and supervisors for the Library Department.

Researches, develops, designs, organizes, directs and coordinates the Library's volunteer program to maximize successful volunteer experiences. This includes, but is not limited to, volunteer recruitment plans, placement, orientation, training sessions, and recognition and appreciation awards and ceremonies. Screens volunteer applications and conducts interviews to determine each volunteer's placement in the Library's Volunteer Program based on interests, skills, and abilities of volunteers.  Maintains contact with volunteers throughout their involvement within the program

Designs and maintains computer-generated records for accessing and preserving data on each volunteer, including service application information, total hours of service (monthly, yearly, and to-date), dates of service, positions held, duties completed, evaluation of work, and recognition and awards received.

Prepares statistical and periodic reports. Writes advertisements and service descriptions to meet the needs of particular divisions within the Library Department. Responds to requests for information from potential volunteers.

Conducts campaigns, through speaking engagements or similar public efforts, to recruit volunteers and promote available volunteer services. Evaluates library volunteers and provides corrective action as needed. Resolves problems involving volunteer placement and participants.

Works closely with the City of Farmington Human Resources Department to maintain the standards set forth by the City of Farmington and to keep current with all pertinent regulatory requirements.

Attends events such as volunteer and retirement fairs, and networks with organizations and businesses that promote volunteer efforts.

Evaluates library volunteers and provides corrective action as needed.

Models the behaviors expected of volunteers.

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.

Understands and follows written and/or verbal instructions.

Participates and attends staff trainings, meetings, programs, and other training sessions of the library.

Must be available to work a varied schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

Complies with all library procedures and policies, and the City guidelines, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.

This position is subject to the City's Drug- and Alcohol-Free Workplace Program, which includes pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

Background check is required.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety Program.

Valid New Mexico's driver's license required with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent required.  Bachelor's degree or specialized course work in volunteer coordination preferred.

Working knowledge of general office practices and procedures, with proficient spelling and grammar skills.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills, to effectively interact with all age levels and cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.

Ability to operate personal computers, including the library's online catalog.  Working knowledge of personal computer operations and file management, and with commonly used applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet Explorer.

Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public on all age levels and cultural backgrounds, both verbally and in writing.

Experience with public speaking and making presentations.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public.

Ability to perform routine duties as assigned with minimal supervision.

Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions.

Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations.

Bilingual skills helpful but not required.


Personal computer and applicable software packages, Library's online catalog and automated system, computer system, typewriter, calculator, photocopy machine, automobile, fax machine, and telephone.
