JOB DUTIES
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Performs a variety of duties including general cabinet, controller, conflict monitor maintenance, construction, operation and maintenance of traffic signals, school flashers, in-pavement lighting, and various Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) including video, inductance, and microwave detection systems, radio, twisted pair, ethernet, and fiber communication systems, emergency vehicle preemption systems, maintenance of both portable and permanent dynamic message boards, and advanced traffic controllers. Working independently and under the supervision of a technical supervisor. Work includes: diagnosing troubleshooting and repairing complex electronic ITS and communications systems, evaluating equipment problems by interpreting blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams, as well as diagnosing fiber optic cable splicing and repair. Contacts include law enforcement, utility companies, private contractors, and the public for the purposes of ensuring ITS equipment functions appropriately. Modifies or constructs new ITS equipment as required; to include aerial and underground work. Responds to emergency traffic signal problems in the field by investigating traffic controller system malfunctions, replacing faulty parts and reconstructing damaged equipment. This requires rotating 24-hour on-call stand-by duty.
Documents all work performed, including: listing cause of problem, corrective measures taken, replacement parts used, etc. This documentation is to be completed in hand-written and electronic form. Is generally alert to conditions and events occurring on city streets and rights-of-way and can respond accordingly. While performing job duties, takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Attendance at work and ability to meet "on-call" requirements are essential functions of this position.
Responds to NM811 "Call before you dig" one-calls, locating underground traffic signal related infrastructure

QUALIFICATIONS:
This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and alcohol Testing Policy which includes pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing. This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Valid State driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years. Comprehensive knowledge of traffic control devices and working knowledge of the standards contained within the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
Job Description - Traffic Signal Trainee – "I" Pay Grade
Electrical and/or electronic experience
Must hold ATSSA Traffic Control Technician certification (or ATSSA Supervisor), or obtain within one year of employment; and
Must hold IMSA Traffic Signal Technician (Level 1) certification, or obtain within one year of employment
Successful completion of both the ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor; and IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level 2 certifications; and the minimum 2 years' experience will qualify the employee for the Traffic Signal Technician I, with "K" Pay Grade
Job Description - Traffic Signal Technician I – "K" Pay Grade
A minimum of 2 years' experience in electronic maintenance of traffic control signal devices
Must hold ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor certification, or obtain within one year of employment; and
Must hold IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level 2 certification, or obtain within one year of employment
Successful completion of the ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor; and minimum 4 years' experience; and IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level 3, will qualify the employee for the Traffic Signal Technician II, with "M" Pay Grade
Job Description - Traffic Signal Technician II – "M" Pay Grade
A minimum of 4 years' experience in electronic maintenance of traffic control signal devices
Must hold ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor certification
Must hold IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level 2 certification
Must hold IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician Level 3 certification, or obtain within one year of employment
Preferred experience working with Econolite cabinets, controllers, communication devices and Centracs software.
Preferred experience installing and maintaining inductive, vehicle detection loops, Wavetronix, radar and camera detection systems.
Preferred temporary traffic control experience.
Preferred knowledge of local major and minor streets, the local traffic network and intersections.
Employee will participate in rotating 24-hour, On-call/ Stand-by schedule
Must be able to be at the Municipal Operations Center (MOC) within thirty (30) minutes after receiving a call
To be "On-Call", the employee must complete the following:
Must successfully pass at least two quarters of probationary evaluation; and
Must pass the Traffic Engineering Division On-Call Test; and
Must pass IMSA Traffic Signal Technician (Level 1) course exam
Must take city vehicle when "On-Call"
Must forward On-Call Phone calls to personal city cell phone
Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the public. Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Miscellaneous hand and power tools, aerial boom truck, platform lift truck, utility locator, forklift, crane track, traffic control computer and related systems, specialty radio and electronic testing equipment, telephone, mobile radio, fax machine, personal computer, and calculator.
